Study SkillsHow to use past papers effectively
Research shows retrieval practice consistently outperforms re-reading notes. Here's how to get the most from past papers.
Start earlier than you think
Don't save past papers for the final week. Working through them from the start of your revision gives you time to identify gaps and address them properly.
Always use the mark scheme
Understanding why an answer earns marks — and why it doesn't — is more valuable than the practice itself. Check every question against the official mark scheme.
Simulate real conditions
Complete at least some papers with no notes, no phone, and a strict time limit. This builds the stamina and pacing judgement you need on the actual day.
Track your weak spots
Keep a note of topics and question types where you consistently lose marks. These are your highest-priority revision targets between papers.
Revisit difficult papers
If a paper was hard the first time, come back to it a few weeks later. A marked improvement is one of the best confidence-builders before exams.
Check your exam board
Specifications vary significantly between AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and CIE. Always use papers from your specific board and specification — not just any past paper.
