Study SkillsHow to use past papers effectively

Research shows retrieval practice consistently outperforms re-reading notes. Here's how to get the most from past papers.

01

Start earlier than you think

Don't save past papers for the final week. Working through them from the start of your revision gives you time to identify gaps and address them properly.

02

Always use the mark scheme

Understanding why an answer earns marks — and why it doesn't — is more valuable than the practice itself. Check every question against the official mark scheme.

03

Simulate real conditions

Complete at least some papers with no notes, no phone, and a strict time limit. This builds the stamina and pacing judgement you need on the actual day.

04

Track your weak spots

Keep a note of topics and question types where you consistently lose marks. These are your highest-priority revision targets between papers.

05

Revisit difficult papers

If a paper was hard the first time, come back to it a few weeks later. A marked improvement is one of the best confidence-builders before exams.

06

Check your exam board

Specifications vary significantly between AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and CIE. Always use papers from your specific board and specification — not just any past paper.

About Exam Paper Depot

Exam Paper Depot is a free resource that brings together past papers, practice tests, and specimen papers from across all the major UK examination boards in one organised, easy-to-navigate place. We cover GCSE, IGCSE, Scottish National 5, and will be expanding to A Level papers shortly.

The site is run by the same team behind World of Teaching — a library of over 1,000 free teacher-made PowerPoint presentations — and The XR School, a directory of virtual reality apps for education. Together these three sites aim to give students, teachers, and parents a comprehensive set of free learning tools.

All paper links point to official or freely accessible sources. No registration is required, and everything on this site is free to use. If you spot a broken link or want to suggest an addition, please get in touch.

Are these past papers free?
